LSUA began offering a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in Fall 2003. Because there were students at LSUA who had completed upper-level course work through LSU Senior College, LSUA was able to produce its first bachelor’s degree graduates in December 2003.
Currently, the teacher education program at Louisiana State University at Alexandria offers one elementary (1-5) education degree. The program also offers:
- Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education
- Pre-K Add-On Certification
- Special Education Add-On Certification
- Alternative Certification in Elementary Education
- Minor in Secondary Education (for math, biology, English, and history majors)
- Alternative Certification in Secondary Education (for students with a bachelor’s degree in biology, English, history, or mathematics)
- Alternative Certification in Health and Physical Education
The Department of Education adopted a conceptual framework model that focuses on the development of the “Proactive Educator”. This model seeks to ensure that program graduates are grounded in and guided by knowledge of content, learners, learning environment, pedagogy, and professional behaviors, skills, and dispositions. This model will produce graduates who are knowledgeable of subject matter and possess the professional competencies to positively impact the learning of students at all levels.
