Alternate Certifications

Elementary Education

A student with a bachelor’s degree in another area can complete 33 hours of course work to become certified to teach in grades 1-5.

Secondary Education

LSUA offers two routes to secondary certification for grades 6-12:

  1. Alternate Pathway - A student with a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with 31 hours of course work in biology, English, mathematics, or social studies can complete 33 hours of course work and become certified to teach that content area in grades 6-12.
  2. Arts/Sciences Pathway - An LSUA student who has declared a major in biology, English, mathematics, or history can complete 33 hours of certification coursework and become certified to teach that content area in grades 6-12 at the time of graduation.

Health and PE

A student with a bachelor’s degree in another area can complete 33 hours of course work and become certified to teach Health and PE in grades K-12.

Add-On Certifications

Special Education

A student, after taking 5 additional courses, can add special education certification to his/her current teaching certificate. Special education is an area of high demand and makes students extremely marketable.

Early Childhood Education

A student, after taking 4 additional courses, can add early childhood certification to his/her current teaching certificate. Early childhood education enables a teacher to become certified in grades Pre-K - 3rd.
