Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education

LSUA's bachelor's degree in elementary education is intended to prepare teachers to teach all subject matter in grades 1-5 in a variety of school settings with abilities to identify, articulate and solve problems of practice in a world of continuous social, political and cultural change, and with reflective practice serving as a philosophical framework for development of each integral component of the program.

Admission Requirements for Professional Elementary Education Program

Admission of Department of Education students to upper-level professional education courses will be restricted to those who have been formally admitted to the teacher education program.

Students who have earned 65 hours of degree credit, have at least a 2.5 grade-point average, credit for EDCI 2020 & EDCI 2030, received faculty approval of application to the department, demonstrated proficiency in writing, completed a dispositions self-rating scale, obtained a passing score on the Computer Competency Exam or earned credit for CIS 1000, and have passed PRAXIS I Examinations in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics will be eligible to enter the teacher education program. All students, regardless of their catalog issue, must meet these requirements.

The university will make every reasonable effort to honor the statement of curricular requirements in the chosen issue of the catalog. However, courses and programs are sometimes discontinued, and requirements are changed as a result of actions by accrediting associations and other external agencies.

Admission Requirements for Student Teaching (EDCI 4000)

Applications for student teaching must be made to the Department of Education no later than two weeks following the first day of classes in the semester prior to student teaching. Late applications cannot be guaranteed consideration.

  • Attainment of senior standing with an overall grade point average of 2.5 and at least a 2.0 grade point average in professional education courses. No grade lower than “C” in professional education courses and in specialized courses required for certification in elementary education, regardless of institution(s) attended.
  • Completion of KIN 2602, 2507; PSYC 2060, 2076; FIAR 2271; EDCI 2020, 2030, 2700, 2900, 3000, 3114, 3125, 3127, 3200, 3400, 3500, 4100, 4200, 4300, 4400 (4800 is taken with 4900)
  • Proficiency in written expression.
  • Pass PRAXIS II:
    • Principles of Learning and Teaching K-8 (30522)
    • Elementary Education: Content Knowledge (10014)

No student may schedule more than one three-semester hour course in addition to EDCI 4900 during the semester in which student teaching is done.
